Treworgy Family Orchards Wins USA Today's Best Corn Maze for Fourth Consecutive Year with "Whale of a Tale" Design
Maine orchard honors state's maritime heritage and commercial fishing industry with Robert McCloskey-inspired maze
LEVANT, MAINE - SEPTEMBER 17, 2025 - For the fourth consecutive year, Treworgy Family Orchards' corn maze has been voted the best in the nation by USA Today's 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards. They marked their 25th maze anniversary with this year's theme, "Whale of a Tale," drawing inspiration from beloved Maine children's author Robert McCloskey's classic book "Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man," creating a tribute to Maine's rich maritime tradition and commercial fishing heritage.
This marks Treworgy's eighth year placing in USA Today's 10 Best Corn Maze competition, with the farm also earning second place for Best Pumpkin Patch this year – a testament to their continued excellence in agri-tourism. The local family-owned farm is a beloved destination for seasonal activities such as their farm summer camp, petting zoo, apple picking, pumpkin patch, berry picking, and Christmas trees.
The "Whale of a Tale" theme perfectly captures the essence of Maine's coastal identity, celebrating the state's deep connection to the sea and the hardworking commercial fishermen who have sustained coastal communities for generations. McCloskey, who made Maine his home, beautifully portrayed the state's maritime culture through his storytelling, making this theme a natural fit for the Maine farm. This is the second McCloskey-inspired maze at Treworgy's. In 2019, the orchard created a "Blueberries for Sal" themed maze that took second place in the USA Today competition.
"Robert McCloskey's stories capture the heart of Maine life, and 'Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man' celebrates the courage and determination of our commercial fishing industry," said Jonathan Kenerson, co-owner of Treworgy Family Orchards. "This maze allows us to honor both Maine's agricultural heritage and the fishermen who are such an important part of our state's economy and culture. The Maine state flag features a farmer and a sailor; we wanted to highlight the twin industries that have defined Maine for generations: farming and fishing." To honor that legacy, the orchard announced it will offer free maze admission September 20–21 to anyone working in the commercial fishing industry.
Treworgy's award-winning corn maze is designed, laid out, and cultivated by the farm team using old fashioned surveying techniques. It is open Tuesdays through Sundays through early November. Special night maze events are scheduled for select evenings in October, where visitors can explore the maze by flashlight for an extra challenge.
