Cortlands and Macs

An apple is an apple is an apple, right? Not really. Each kind has its own special characteristics, taste, and uses. Here's some information about the two kinds we grow here at Treworgy Family Orchards.

Cortland apples

Identify them…

  • Sweet and a little tart
  • Juicy
  • Tender, snow white flesh

Use them…

  • Great for snacks, salads, sauce, pies, and baking
  • Freeze well

Find them…

  • September through October

Tip…

  • Cortlands are great for kabobs, in fruit plates, and as garnishes because they don’t turn brown quickly when cut.

Mcintosh apples

Identify them…

  • Sweet and tangy
  • Very juicy
  • Tender, white flesh

Use them…

  • Eat them or make a yummy applesauce
  • Great for salads and pies

Find them…

  • September through June

Tip…

  • McIntosh apples cook down fast, so it's best to add a thickener when making pies.
